In 2010, with startup assistance from the Abell Foundation, the Book Bank entered the world of sustainability through social enterprise with our online book-selling operation.  We use various marketplace vendors such as Amazon, Alibris, and ABE Books, to make our books available for sale.  You can also find us at the Baltimore Book Festival in September.

 

The sale of books for adults has allowed us to be more self sufficient, covering 90% of our operational expenses.  This allows us to raise funds for our programs such as the Bookmobile and the book distribution to families and classrooms throughout the state.

 

Consignment Opportunities

Over time, we have developed consignment relationships with the Enoch Pratt libraries, Harford County libraries, St Mary's County library and others. This provides the Maryland Book Bank with consistent inventory supply and provides revenue for the organization supplying the books.

 


Workforce Development

The program is staffed with people from the Mayor's Office Of Employment Development.  Once in our program, the participants are trained in inventory management and shipping software.  The participants are then able to use this knowledge to procure jobs in warehouses and inventory processing facilities.
